WORLD CUP 1998: ARGENTINA V. ENGLAND {SECOND ROUND} {TAPE 1 OF 3} {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)
Summary
Tape one of three. A live broadcast of the Soccer World Cup 1998 second-round match, Argentina vs. England, from the Stadium St. Denis in Paris. The game is presented in detail, with extensive commentary on the players' performance, as well as interviews with players, journalists, and audience members about the general soccer environment. The hosts of the programs are Jorge Ramos, Reynaldo Barco, Alberto Gambetta, Hern‡n Pereyra, and Alvaro Riet. They begin by discussing this difficult and crucial game, which will enable the victor to qualify in the quarter finals of the match. Guest commentator Martin Derby provides statistics on the competitors. The hosts try to evoke the atmosphere in the stadium, which houses 35,000 soccer fans. They also look back briefly on the famous goal scored by Argentinean player Diego Maradona in the 1983 World Championship in Mexico, which won the title for his team. The discussion is briefly interrupted by a news report from JosŽ Luis Arenas. Arenas discusses a program of cooperation between Mexico and Canada, President Clinton's praise of the Chinese economy as a stabilizing force during the Asian financial crisis, and Latin-American news. The commentators return to speculate on the outcome of the game about to start. They also invite listeners to call and speculate similarly. Arenas returns and reports on a U.S. attack on an Iraqi plane, the refusal of Cuba to accept economic stipulations of the United Nations, and a Papal solution to the conflict in Colombia. There follows an interview with Argentinean player Diego Pablo Simeone and soccer analyst Carlos Salvador Villardo, who both note that Argentina is favored to win this game but also comment on England's desire to win, which may make the race tight. The hosts then discuss the different styles and tactics of the two teams. They characterize the English as classic players -- persistent, ambitious, and very dangerous once they get the ball. Argentina, they suggest, will try to keep the ball as much as possible and to attack consistently. The two teams come out into the stadium, and the game starts. The first two goals are scored in the first ten minutes -- by Batistuta (for Argentina) and by Alan Shearer (for England), who executes a penalty. The match becomes increasingly emotional, especially when in minute sixteen Michael Owen scores for England. The hosts comment on the weakness of the Argentinean defense. England is more prudent and takes every opportunity to attack, they note; Argentina has to break through the English defense. This first part of the game concludes with action by Javier Zanetti, who helps Argentina catch up with a stroke, evening the score two to two. Includes commercials and promos. Continues with R:21248.
