WORLD CUP 1998: BRAZIL V. SCOTLAND {FIRST ROUND} {TAPE 1 OF 2} {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)

Summary

Tape one of two. A live broadcast of the Soccer World Cup 1998 Opening Game, Brazil vs. Scotland, from the Stadium St. Denis in Paris. The game is presented in detail, with extensive commentary on the players' performance, as well as interviews with players, journalists, and audience members about the general soccer environment. The hosts of the programs are Jorge Ramos, Reynaldo Barco, Alberto Gambetta, and Alvaro Riet. The programs starts with a discussion of the pre-game atmosphere. Nadia Rowinsky reports from inside the stadium, and Samuel Jacobo speaks from Los Angeles with a summary of statistics of world championships. This segment also features interviews with two of the leading Brazilian players, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, who declare themselves ready and willing to play. The hosts inform their listeners that Brazil is highly favored in the match. A short news segment presented by JosŽ Luis Arenas precedes the first part of the game. Arenas speaks briefly about an ecological disaster in Venezuela and about a strike of professors and students in Peru in protest against President Fujimori's economic program. The hosts then continue discussion of the game with a report from Dionisio Estrada in the streets of Paris asking passersby for their predictions about the match, and a summary of Brazil's performance in the past year by Carlos Salvador Villardo. The match is opened by French President Jacques Chirac before 80,000 people. It takes Brazil less than five minutes to score the first goal of the match: Sampaio rises and hits a ball launched by Bebeto. Brazil continues its offensive, but Scottish goalie Jim Leighton makes a couple of strong saves against Bebeto, Roberto Carlos, and top-ranked Ronaldo. Scotland gets a chance in minute twenty-nine with Gallacher, who is stopped by Baiano's fault; the referee allows a penalty, used by Collins.
