PHIL HENDRIE SHOW, THE {DAVID HALL AND TED BELL} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this comedic radio call-in series that looks at topical issues through the eyes of different characters, all of whom are creations of multi-voiced host Phil Hendrie. This episode contains two different segments. In the first, director of programming David G. Hall (Hendrie) calls in to explain to Hendrie that he is thinking of jumping into the extremely profitable Los Angeles-based Spanish-speaking radio market by adding Spanish language dubbing to each of the station's popular programs. When Hendrie expresses doubt about the idea, Hall insists on giving an on-air demonstration of what he means. Hendrie reminds Hall that he can't speak Spanish, but Hall tells him the language is easy to fake and admonishes the host not to worry about it; he speaks perfect "mock-Spanic." Powerless against his boss, Hendrie caves in and plays a tape of a Rush Limbaugh show while Hall babbles nonsense in the background. When a number of outraged and offended listeners call in to lambaste Hall, he calmly explains that he is simply at the mercy of the ever changing radio industry. In the second segment of the episode, wealthy macho man Ted Bell (Hendrie) calls in to ask Hendrie's advice. Ever since he found out that his son is gay, he tells the host, Bell has been wrestling with his own homophobia. When Hendrie presses Bell for details about his son's "coming out," Bell explains that his son has both expressed interest in joining his high school's wrestling team and begun listening to the new-wave band Pet Shop Boys; the father concludes that his son must be gay. Hendrie tries to explain to Hall that he is playing into stereotypes, but Hall refuses to listen. In his estimation, his son is gay, and he has to learn to live with it. A flurry of angry calls follows. Commercials deleted.
