MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO LISTENING SERIES, THE:
CBC RADIO, PACKAGE 1: THE CBC AND 9/11
Summary
Since 1936, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
(CBC/Radio-Canada) has been providing quality
programming to over ten million Canadians scattered
across northern North America. With the outbreak of
World War II, national radio became essential, as
listeners throughout Canada devoured war reports by
Matthew Halton and future "Bonanza" star Lorne Green,
a.k.a. "the Voice of Doom." Today the CBC/Radio-Canada
includes four radio networks that deliver a variety of
programs in both French and English. In addition, the
CBC/Radio-Canada provides the international shortwave
radio service Radio Canada International (RCI).
The CBC and 9/11
"The Sunday Edition: American Heartland"
Less than two weeks after 9/11, Sunday Edition producer
Karin Wells took an Amtrak train, the Texas Eagle, from
Dallas to Chicago. She recorded the voices of people
from America's heartland as they attempted to make
sense of the terrorist attacks and discussed what the
response of the United States ought to be.
(September 23, 2001; 30 minutes)
"The Sunday Edition: Interview with Christopher Buckley"
In the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United
States many believed that comedy, and particularly
irony, had become inappropriate. Host Michael Enright
and American humorist and writer Christopher Buckley
discuss what humor is permissible and where restraint
is advisable in a postÐ9/11 world.
(October 7, 2001; 25 minutes)
"The Sunday Edition: Little Kabul"
Presented just two weeks after the U.S. began bombing
Afghanistan, this documentary examines the thoughts
and feelings of Afghans living in America. While most
of them do not support Osama bin Laden or the Taliban,
they find themselves fearing for friends and family in
their embattled homeland. The CBC's Connie Watson
reports from Fremont, California, home of "Little
Kabul," the largest Afghan community in the United
States. (October 21, 2001; 30 minutes)
"The Sunday Edition: With Friends Like These"
In order to put the events of 9/11 in context, this
documentary report produced by Bob Carty examines the
history of Saudi Arabia and its relationship with the
United States. This includes an exploration of the rise
of Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and Al Qaeda.
(February 24, 2002; 45 minutes)
