IMUS IN THE MORNING: WFAN COVERAGE OF THE 9/11/01
TERRORIST ATTACKS {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (RADIO)

Summary

This tape presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on WFAN-AM's "Imus in the Morning" program, hosted by Don Imus. The tape opens in the middle of an update from Imus that a "U.S. senior official" has reported that one of the airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center was a hijacked flight that was going to Los Angeles from Boston. Imus then interrupts himself and begins to play the audio from MSNBC cable television over the air as President George W. Bush begins to speak from an elementary school in Florida. Bush refers to the plane crashes as "an apparent terrorist attack on [the] country." After Bush's speech, Imus and reporter Charles McCord begin to list what they know about what is closing around the city, from bridges and tunnels to schools. The men then hear a report from the MSNBC feed running in their studio that a bomb is said to have gone off at the Pentagon. They let the MSNBC audio run for a while, then go to a phone call from reporter Warner Wolf, who lives in close proximity to the World Trade Center. Imus asks Wolf to describe what he sees. "This is horrible," Wolf says. "There are people falling out of the buildings." The tape concludes as Imus goes over a chronology of what has happened thus far. Includes commercials.

(Station and series run vary; this series also aired on WNBC in New York City from 1971 to 1987.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Ralph Guild, 2002.
