NPR NEWS SPECIAL REPORT {TERRORIST ATTACKS} {TAPE
1 OF 3} (RADIO)

Summary

Tape one of three. This broadcast presents National Public Radio coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This coverage begins at 10:00 p.m. EDT on September 11. From Washington, anchor Neal Conan introduces the program, then Frank Stasio gives updates on the day's news, including President George W. Bush's televised address to Americans, given earlier in the evening. David Wellman describes the evacuation of the Capitol building in Washington, and Steve Inskeep reports on the fire at the Pentagon. Stasio says that there are no "credible estimates" of the number of people who have been killed and injured overall but adds that those lost on the hijacked airplanes total 266. WNYC's Leticia Theodore describes the outpouring of people donating blood in New York. Stasio then touches on the nation's skyrocketing gasoline prices, the plunge in Tokyo stocks, and the closing of American trading for at least a day. Conan describes President Bush's movements around the nation during the day, and the president's televised address is replayed in full. Conan is then joined by senior news analyst Daniel Shore and by NPR's Pam Fessler. Shore comments on Bush's speech. Conan invites calls from listeners, who can offer input on how they think the nation has changed since the attacks. The first caller brings up the issue of military retaliation, and Shore expands on what could result from such retaliation. Another caller, a man who worked on the thirty-eighth floor of one of the World Trade towers, describes his experience during the morning. An eleventh grader then describes his impressions of the day's events. After a brief news update, two more callers share their thoughts. One discusses her fears of what will happen next while the other explains his dissatisfaction with Bush's address to the nation. Conan reads several biographies of people who have been killed in the attacks. Mike Schuster talks about the evidence pointing to Osama bin Laden, concluding that much remains to be learned. Schuster suggests that intelligence warnings must have preceded these attacks, and Shore describes the link between bin Laden and Afghanistan's Taliban. A short segment from one of Rudy Giuliani's press conferences is played, in which the New York mayor expresses hope that people are still alive in the rubble in downtown Manhattan. Richard Hake of WNYC joins the other reporters to comment on Giuliani's statements and the mood on the street in Manhattan. A final caller, a thirteen-year-old girl, discusses her feelings about the attacks. Continues with R:24272.
