ATTACKS} {TAPE 3 OF 4} (RADIO)
Summary
Continued from R:24286. Tape three of four. This broadcast presents National Public Radio coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This coverage aired on September 11. The tape begins as NPR's Corva Coleman, and other reporters, recap the terrorist attacks of this morning, and their immediate aftermath. Coleman also announces various cancellations and closings. Host Neal Conan speaks with Dr. Robert Labinson, director of the Emergency Department at St. Clare's Hospital in Manhattan; Labinson talks about the emergency cases currently coming to St. Clare's. Correspondent Peter Kenyan reports that a 911 call was made from a cell phone by someone on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. Kenyan gives news about the way the nation is responding to these attacks, and also explains that the federal government is running smoothly. He speculates on who may have been behind the attacks, mentioning the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, and al Qaeda. Kenyan also discusses secondary effects of a terror attack such as this. Conan is joined by guests Philip Wilcox, coordinator for counter terrorism during the Clinton administration, and Dr. Gerald Post, a professor of political psychology and international affairs at George Washington University. Post, who recently interviewed over thirty incarcerated Middle Eastern terrorists, talks about their emotional state, their motivations, and how they would respond to knowledge of these attacks. Wilcox describes the extensive logistical and financial coordination that was necessary to carry out the attacks. He also explains why efforts in counter terrorism can go only so far. Reporter Steve Inskeep describes the present scene at the Pentagon. Wilcox talks more about counter terrorist intelligence efforts; Post describes Middle Eastern terrorists' exaggerated perceptions of Americans, and also shares details of their world view. Wilcox and Post give background on terrorist Osama bin Laden, and Post describes how the prisoners he interviewed have been affected by their incarceration. An NPR producer in Chicago reports on the state of things in that city. Conan reports on air traffic and the latest news from the Federal Aviation Administration. NPR's Terry Gross introduces comments from Roger Cohen, foreign editor of the New York Times, who shares his feelings about the attacks. Writer and pilot William Langewiesche gives his perception of the hijackings and describes his recent writing work. Post closes with some comments about effective counter terrorist efforts.
