MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: ROCK 'N' ROLL AND RADIO: PACKAGE #3: CONTEMPORARY RADIO: RADIO TODAY: TOP FORTY VARIATIONS

Summary

The third "Rock 'n' Roll and Radio" listening series package presented by The Museum of Television & Radio. "Radio Today: Top Forty Variations" features two programs.

The first program, a "Machine Gun" Kelly radio show, was broadcast on KHJ-AM in Los Angeles, California, in 1975. Kelly, a fast-talking Top Forty disc jockey, introduces popular songs of the era. Musical selections include the following: "Sky High" (Jigsaw), "Turn Back the Hands of Time" (Tyrone Davis), "Fly Away" (John Denver), "Ain't No Moutain High Enough" (Diana Ross), "Love Machine (Part 1)" (The Miracles), "Bitch" (The Rolling Stones), "Hold Me" (Fleetwood Mac), "That's the Way (I Like It)" (KC and the Sunshine Band), "Island Girl" (Elton John), and "I Love Music" (The O'Jays). Includes commercials and public service announcements.

The second program, from 1989, is a portion of deejay Scott Shannon's final broadcast as head "zookeeper" on New York's WHTZ-FM "Z-Morning Zoo." Several friends and celebrities say goodbye to Shannon in between musical selections, time checks, weather updates, traffic reports, and listener contests. Tapes of early "Zoo" broadcasts provide memories of the morning show that propelled the station from "worst to first" in the ratings. Guests who wish Shannon good luck at his new job in California include: former zoo member "Captain" Kevin, fitness mogul Jake Steinfeld, tabloid journalist Gordon Elliot, actress Allison Smith from "Kate & Allie," former football player Phil McConkey, and baseball player Lee Mazzilli and his wife Dani. Also included is tape of diminutive, geriatric actress Clara Peller reciting her trademark tagline "Where's the beef?" which she made famous in a commercial for Wendy's fast food restaurants. Musical selections include the following: "Straight Up" (Paula Abdul), "Bang the Drum All Day" (Todd Rundgren), "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (The Rolling Stones), "Old Time Rock & Roll" (Bob Seger), "Everytime You Go Away" (Paul Young), "Eye of the Tiger" (Survivor), and "Shout" (Otis Day and the Knights). Includes commercials and promos.
