MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO LISTENING SERIES, THE: ROCK 'N' ROLL AND RADIO: PACKAGE 10: ROCK 'N' ROLL IS HERE TO STAY II: TOP FORTY LEGENDS

Summary

The tenth "Rock 'n' Roll and Radio" listening series package presented by The Museum of Television & Radio. "Rock 'n' Roll Is Here to Stay, II: Top Forty Legends" consists of "An Overview" of the series and radio programs by two inveterate voices of the popular music radio format.

The "Overview" (running time: 22:20) -- hosted by venerable disc jockey Dave Herman -- traces the musical roots of rock 'n' roll, and how the radio medium and this hybird of rhythm 'n' blues and country music influenced each other through the decades. Highlights include segments of: "Rd, Hot, and Blue" in 1951 with Dewey Phillips on WHBQ in Memphis; "Grand Ole Opry" on WSM in Nashville in 1949; "The Camel Rock 'n' Roll Dance Party" with Alan Freed on CBS in 1956; Dick Biondi on WLS in Chicago in 1962; Bruce Morrow and Scott Muni with Ringo Starr on WABC in New York in 1965; Wolfman Jack on XERB in Los Angeles in 1966; Rosko on WNEW-FM in New York in 1970; Tom Donahue on KMET-FM in Los Angeles in 1968; "Machine Gun" Kelly on KHJ in Los Angeles in 1975; and Larry Woodside on KROQ-FM in Los Angeles in 1979.

The first program (running time: 43:09) is "The Real Don Steele" which originally aired on KOIL in Omaha, NE in 1962. The fast-talking deejay plays popular music of the era. Musical selections include the following: "Chattanooga Choo Choo" (Floyd Cramer), "Dear One" (Larry Finnegan), "Cajun Queen" (Jimmy Dean), "The Greatest Hurt" (Jackie Wilson), "What'd I Say (Part I)" (Bobby Darin), "Shadrack" (Brook Benton), "Cry Baby Cry" (the Angels), "Town Without Pity" (Gene Pitney),"Jamie" (Eddie Holland), and "B'wa Nina (Pretty Girl)" (the Tokens). Includes commercials and public service announcements.

The second program (running time: 31:39) is "Saturday Night Party" with Bruce Morrow, popularly known as Cousin Brucie. It originally aired on WABC in New York City in 1963. Morrow infrequently utters his trademark yawp, "Eiiiiiyyy!" This segment also includes the syndicated "Tom Harmon Sports Show," which features an interview with Navy football coach Wayne Harden. Musical selections include the following: "Forget Him" (Bobby Rydell), "That'll Be the Day" (Buddy Holly), and "Talk Back Trembling Lips" (Johnny Tillotson). Includes commercials.
