DJ AIRCHECKS {MURRAY "THE K," JOHNNY DONOVAN,
BWANA JOHNNY, WOLFMAN JACK} (RADIO)
Summary
This program consists of six airchecks from several different rock 'n' roll radio shows recorded between 1964 and 1971, and originating from New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Hackensack. The first comes from WINS-AM in New York City in 1964, where disc jockey Murray "the K" (Murray Kaufman) hosts the "Swingin' Soiree," providing hit music, comedy, and weather reports. Musical selections include the following: "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (Dionne Warwick), "Ringo" (Lorne Greene), "The 81" (Candy and the Kisses), "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" (Bobby Rydell), "Into Something Good" (Herman's Hermits), and "Saturday Night at the Movies" (the Drifters). This aircheck runs 24:05. In the second aircheck, from WOR-FM in New York City in 1969, deejay Johnny Donovan introduces popular music and offers weather reports. The songs Donovan plays are scoped so that only the beginnings and endings are heard. This aircheck runs 12:31. A 1964 aircheck from Boston's WMEX reports on the hysteria surrounding that year's Beatles concert at Boston Garden. Host Bob Kennedy interviews George Harrison's sister, Louise Harrison Caldwell, who asserts that all the group's members are Christians and discusses their frustration about not being able to get a good cheeseburger. There is a report from outside of the Beatles' hotel as well as a bit of tape of John Lennon introducing the recording, "It's for You," which he and Paul McCartney wrote for singer Cilla Black. This aircheck runs 14:47. The next aircheck, a 1966 Wolfman Jack show from XERB in Los Angeles, offers soulful rock music mixed with the deejay's distinctive howls. The host talks over many of the songs, which include Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood," and Alvin and the Cash Registers "Alvin's Boo-Ga-Loo." This aircheck runs 10:03. The next aircheck is from a 1971 Bwana Johnny show on WWDJ in Hackensack, New Jersey. This program consists of deejay patter in between popular songs which are scoped so that only the beginnings and endings are heard. This aircheck runs 7:51. The final aircheck is from Dr. Al Adams' 1969 radio program on WKDA in Nashville. Assisting Adams is "Willard the Duck." The pair trade jokes, and Adams introduces popular songs which are scoped. This aircheck runs 10:24. These six airchecks are followed by a promotional piece which stresses the popularity of radio and encourages advertising on the medium. This portion of the tape runs 5:17. Includes commercials, public service announcements, and promos.
