WORLD SERIES, 1956: GAME 1, PT. 3 OF 4 {NEW YORK YANKEES AT BROOKLYN DODGERS} (RADIO)
Summary
Continued from R:8582. Part three of four. "The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports" features live coverage of the first game of the 1956 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers from Brooklyn's Ebbets Field, with Bob Neal announcing. With one man out and men on first and second in the top of the fifth, Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Sal "the Barber" Maglie induces both Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron to fly out. Bob Wolff then replaces Bob Neal as announcer for the rest of the game. With Johnny Kucks pitching for the Yankees, the Dodgers go down quietly, ending the fifth with a score of Dodgers 6, Yankees 3. In the top of the sixth, Maglie must work out of a jam when Andy Carey hits a single and pinch hitter Bob Cerv also gets on base safely with two outs. Hank Bauer hits a fly ball, ending the inning. Tommy Morgan replaces Kucks on the mound for the Yankees in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan retires Carl Furillo, Roy Campanella, and Sandy Amoros quickly. The seventh inning begins with the Yankees still trailing by three runs. Following a walk to Mickey Mantle, the Yankees are again set down by Maglie. The Dodgers threaten to score, unsuccessfully, in the bottom of the seventh. Maglie strikes out the first two batters and gets the third to pop up, ending the Yankees' eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees send Bob Turley to the mound. Turley strikes out Gil Hodges and Campanella, and gets Furillo to ground out. Includes commercials. Continues with R:8584.
