Summary
Part one of this three-part broadcast of the twenty-first annual musical and cultural celebration from New Orleans, the "Crescent City," hosted by Eric Jackson and featuring Cajun, zydeco, jazz, gospel and Afro-Caribbean music as well as the wit and wisdom of local writers and the food and traditions of the "Big Easy." Some of the non-musical topics include: a reporter by Kalamu ya Salaam from the jazz tent; a report from Gabou Mendy from the Congo Square stage; a New Orleans culinary report by Elizabeth Arnold; an essay called "Gumbo" by Vertamae Grosvenor; a feature called "Accents" by Askia Mohammed on New Orleans' multiplicity of dialects; Lee Grue reads a poem called "Billie Pierce" about the eponymous New Orleans singer and musician; an essay by writer Andrei Codrescu called "Alligator Tail Piquante"; a report by Elizabeth Arnold called "Second True Love Baptist Church BBQ Chicken"; a poem by Mona Lisa Saloy called "Southern Sisters"; an interview by Becky Drake with legendary New Orleans banjo and guitar player Danny Barker; and Laura Rosenthal reads her essay entitled "Jazz Babies."
