Summary
Part one of this eight-part radio series recalling the news, music, and popular culture of the World War II period. This program concentrates on the years immediately preceding the war, when Franklin D. Roosevelt became President and the nation staggered to recuperate from the Great Depression. The show's hosts describe events and social conditions from 1938 to 1939, and play music from the period. Recordings include: "I Ain't Got No Home in This World Anymore" sung by Woody Guthrie, "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" by Al Jolson, "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain" by Kate Smith, "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" sung by Mary Martin, and "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland." Other featured songs include "September Song," "I'd Give a Million Tomorrows," and "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?" This program also features audio clips from the films "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind" and the radio broadcast of Orson Welles's "War of the Worlds." Includes commercials.
