MURROW: REPORT ON BOMBING MISSION OVER BERLIN

Summary

Murrow safely returned from his flight with an RAF Lancaster bomber crew on a night raid over Berlin, reports via short wave with his observations. He comments on the crew's briefing on the target (Germany's greatest center of war production), boarding take off of the four-motored Lancaster "D For Dog," and flight to join with other bombers over the North sea. He describes anti-aircraft fire attack by fighters encountered by "D For Dog", the releasing of the plane's bombs and incendiaries, and the plane's safe return flight to England. Murrow notes that two of the four reporters assigned to the mission did not return and pays tribute to his missing colleagues he observes that "Berlin was a kind of orchestrated hell, a terrible symphony of light and flame."
