ALL THINGS CONSIDERED {VIETNAM WAR; DRUG ABUSE} {SERIES PREMIERE} (RADIO)
Summary
The premiere of this news and public affairs series. The program begins with a report by host Robert Connelly on a demonstration of 7,000 protestors in Washington, D.C., against the Vietnam War that day. Although the protest did not accomplish the goal of causing the federal government to close down, it stopped traffic and caused general pandemonium. Reporters Jeff Kamen, Stephen Banker, and Jim Russell describe the scene and interview protestors and police officers on the roadways, at the Pentagon, and at the Lincoln Memorial. Connelly then leads a discussion about the demonstration with Banker, Russell, and Trudy Rubin of the Christian Science Monitor. Works by poets Wilfred Owen and Jacques Prevert are read aloud to demonstrate the collapse of the heroic ideal of war, which has slowly dissipated since World War I. In the next segment, reporter Wayne Olson interviews a barber in Ames, Iowa, who shaves girls' legs in order to pick up business that he lost as a result of men's long hairstyles. Jack Mitchell then reports on the day's news, including technicalities involving the death penalty, the pornography trade, and reporters withholding the names of their sources; the news report concludes with a broadcast of an address by U.S. Undersecretary of State John Irwin to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during hearings about ending the Vietnam War. Next, reporter Anthony Lawrence discusses the changing image of the U.S. in the Far East and the process of U.S. withdrawal from the region. In the next segment, Gwen Hudley interviews "Janice," a twenty-six-year-old former nurse whose addiction to drugs almost ended her life. After a guitar performance by Roy Buchanan meant to convey the mood of "Janice," Hudley speaks with Connelly about drug treatment programs, particularly the importance of a good relationship between doctors and the patients they treat. In the final segment, Allen Ginsberg and his father, Louis, discuss the current drug culture, its beneficial or detrimental impact on youth, and the role it plays in violent activities.
