Summary
Part one of two of this special in which Bob Hope celebrates forty-four years of Christmases with NBC by presenting highlights from his holiday specials of years past. Hope introduces the following segments, among others: Hope jokes about the poor quality of Army food during a Christmas Eve trooper show; a sketch in which Hope, Frances Langford, and "Vera Vague" (Barbara Jo Allen) try to sneak into a naval hospital after being accosted by a sentry played by Jerry Colonna; Bing Crosby and Carol Richards sing "Silver Bells" with Les Brown's band, from a 1950 special; a sketch in which Hope is caught by a cop after he cuts down a pine tree in a Burbank park in an attempt to save money on a Christmas tree; the New Christy Minstrels perform "Here We Come a Caroling" in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City; the Jim Henson Muppet, Rowlf the Dog, and John Denver sing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"; Hope, at Long Beach Veteran's Hospital, jokes about the eating habits of the patients; a Hollywood Boulevard Santa (Jack Kirkwood) tries to wrangle some money out of Hope by complaining of his woes; Jack Webb and Ben Alexander are featured in a scene from the "Dragnet" Christmas show, followed by Stan Freberg's parody of the same, called "Yulenet"; Hope goes Christmas shopping for his wife Dolores with announcer Bill Goodwin, and finds himself the butt of jokes by the snooty floorwalker (played by Frank Nelson); Nat King Cole sings "The Christmas Song"; an infirm Irene Ryan tells Hope of her day-to-day Christmas tree rental; Frank Sinatra, with the Ralph Brewster Singers, sings "Jingle Bells"; and Al Jolson gets a plug in for NBC in his performance of "Jingle Bells."
