PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, A: NEWS FROM LAKE WOBEGON, FALL (RADIO)

Summary

A compilation of segments from this variety series hosted by Garrison Keillor, produced by Minnesota Public Radio, and broadcast on affiliates of American Public Radio. This program features five segments relating to autumn in Keillor's mythical hometown of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota. In "Giant Decoys," Keillor describes the history of the Pete Peterson Memorial Duck Blind and Hunting Lodge, and the giant decoys built for it by the Sons of Knute. "Darryl Tollerud's Long Day" is the story of a farmer who accidentally locks himself in the grainery for the day. In the next segment, "Hog Slaughter," Keillor recalls witnessing the slaughtering of hogs as a child, and stresses the respect that farmers had for the livestock that were used for nourishment. He also tells a story of a lonely, mentally deficient woman whom the townspeople tolerate. In "Thanksgiving," Keillor describes some of the fancy new ways the town's residents try to celebrate the holiday, pointing out that family gatherings demonstrate how little people change as they grow up. "The Royal Family" is the tale of a family in Lake Wobegon whose only hope and joy comes from believing that they are descendants of Scotland's Royal House of Stuart.

(This series also aired on National Public Radio beginning in 1994.)
