MEET ERNEST HEMINGWAY (RADIO)
Summary
This program, hosted by Leon Pearson, examines author Ernest Hemingway through the recollections of his colleagues and critics. During the program, the following writers and critics, as well as acquaintances of Hemingway's, share tales about the great author and comment on his work: Charles Fenton, Sidney Franklin, James T. Farrell, Cornelia Otis Skinner, John Mason Brown, Max Eastman, Ted Scott, Leonard Lyons, Robert Manning, and Malcolm Cowley. Specifically these people discuss the following topics, among others: Hemingway's years as a journalist for the Kansas City Star and the emergence of his writing style; the influence of being a soldier on his work; Hemingway's research for "Death in the Afternoon"; his modesty; Hemingway's concept of what being a writer means; his marriages, use of profanity, and eccentric manner; the fight between Hemingway and Max Eastman; the exchange of challenges between Hemingway and Ted Scott after Scott insulted Hemingway's wife, Mary; Hemingway's two-fisted drinking; and his recent Nobel Prize award. In addition, cartoonist Al Capp compares Hemingway to Hairless Joe; excerpts from a spoof of "For Whom the Bell Tolls," entitled "For Whom the Gong Bangs," are featured; and Marlon Brando reads excerpts of "The Old Man and the Sea." At the end of the program, Pearson explains that Hemingway now lives a reclusive life.
