METROPOLITAN OPERA BROADCASTS: LOHENGRIN, ACT II,
PT. 1 (RADIO)

Summary

Continued from R86:0143. Part two of four. One in this series of performances by the Metropolitan Opera. In this program, the Metropolitan Opera performs "Lohengrin" by Richard Wagner. This part begins with curtain calls. Mrs. August Belmont and David Sarnoff, both members of the Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors, ask for public support during the intermission. Following the prelude, Act II begins. Ortrud conspires with her banished husband, Frederick of Telramund, to regain their position by sparking Elsa's curiosity about the true identity of her mysterious fiancŽ. The balcony scene follows with the aria "Euch Luften" ("Fair Breezes"), as Elsa sings to the breezes that brought Lohengrin to her. At the wedding, Ortrud and Frederick angrily accuse Lohengrin of sorcery and taunt Elsa for her ignorance. Terrified, Elsa clings to Lohengrin as the King orders the marriage to proceed, but suspicions begin to plague her as the crowd watches them enter the chapel. Continues with R86:0145.
