METROPOLITAN OPERA BROADCASTS: AIDA, ACT III
(RADIO)
Summary
Continued from R87:0175. Part three of four. One in
this series of performances by the Metropolitan Opera.
In this program, hosted by Milton Cross, the
Metropolitan Opera performs "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi.
In the first scene of Act III, also known as the "Nile
Scene," Aida waits to see Radames, singing the aria "O
patria mia." She is afraid he is going to bid her
goodbye forever. Her father, Amonasro, arrives and asks
her to obtain information from her lover about the
Egyptians' plan to continue the war. When Radames
comes, Amonasro hides as Aida persuades Radames to go
with her to Ethiopia. When she asks how they can safely
avoid the Egyptian army en route, he unwittingly
discloses the name of a secret road that Amonasro can
now use to defeat Egypt. Excited by this information,
Amonasro jumps out from behind a rock and,
dumbfounded, Radames realizes what he has done.
Amonasro, however, encourages Radames to go with him
and his daughter, whom he offers to Radames. Amneris
appears and is enraged that Aida and Radames are
together. Aida and her father run for their lives as
Ramades remains behind. During the third intermission,
"Biographies in Music" features the second part of a
profile of diva Emma CalvŽ, hosted by Francis Robinson.
Several of Calve's recordings are played, including
excerpts from her most famous and controversial role,
Carmen. Continues with R87:0177. Sponsored by Texaco.
