MAESTRO: THE ELEGANT BATON OF TOSCANINI, XII (RADIO)

Summary

The twelfth in a series of documentaries on conductor Arturo Toscanini produced by WFCR in Amherst, MA. Series host Frank Brieff, conductor of the New Haven Symphony and former member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini's direction, introduces the program and offers two anecdotes illustrating how Toscanini remained active at age 83, in 1950. Program highlights include: excerpts of Toscanini rehearsing Claude Debussy's "La Mer" with the NBC Symphony Orchestra; the complete performance of "La Mer" from the orchestra's June 1950 broadcast; excerpts from the orchestra's rehearsal of Maurice Ravel's suite from "Daphnis et Chloe," followed by its 1949 performance of this work; and, as a preview of the following week's program, excerpts from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Un Ballo in Maschera."
