PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, A {SERIES FINALE}, PT. 1 OF 2 (RADIO)

Summary

Part one of two in the final program of this variety series hosted by Garrison Keillor, produced by Minnesota Public Radio, and broadcast on affiliates of American Public Radio. Musical highlights include the following: Keillor sings "Love's Old Sweet Song" and leads the audience in singing "Tell Me Why"; Chet Atkins, on guitar, plays Fats Waller's "The Jitterbug Waltz"; Keillor, accompanied by Atkins on the guitar, sings a ballad; Atkins performs a banjo number; Scottish singer Jean Redpath performs a folk song; in lyrics set to "Handel's Suite (Parting Songs)," Vern Sutton and Keillor demonstrate the long goodbyes favored by residents of Keillor's fictional hometown of Lake Wobegon, Minn.; and Keillor sings his composition, "Brownie and Pete" along with Atkins on the guitar. Between songs, Keillor talks about leaving for Denmark. Also, Keillor reads messages and greetings (including a marriage proposal) to and from listeners; Roy Blount, Jr., reads his humorous poem in honor of the series' finale; and Keillor recites a poem to his wife while Atkins plays the guitar. In the final episode of "The Adventures of Buster the Show Dog," Buster and his human friends finally return to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn., only to learn that they are wanted for burglary. In the Lake Wobegon segment, Sutton sings "Stars and Stripes Forever," "Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet," and "Meet Me in St. Louis." Sutton and Keillor also perform the "Sons of Knute Fishing Song." In his monologue, Keillor describes how it rained all day on his last day in Lake Wobegon. Continues with R88:0113.
