MOONLIGHT, MEMORIES, AND MILLER, PT. 1 (RADIO)

Summary

Part one of three. This retrospective of the Glenn Miller Orchestra hosted by Jim Lang combines musical selections, interviews and discussion, and excerpts from various recordings. As the program begins, "Moonlight Serenade" is played, followed by Lang's introduction of special guest Jimmy Stewart. A recording of the orchestra playing the song "I'm Stepping Out with a Memory Tonight" is followed by a recoding of Miller talking with vocalist Ray Eberle about Eberle's career. Lang and Stewart discuss a number of topics, including Stewart's memories of radio when he was a child; the film "The Glenn Miller Story," in which Stewart played the title role; the way Stewart approached the character; and Stewart's recollection of his attempts to appear as if he could play the trombone, with the assistance of veteran trombone player Joe Yukl. Interspersed throughout the conversation are recordings of songs performed by The Glenn Miller Orchestra, including "The Woodpecker Song," "To You," "Tuxedo Junction," "Fools Rush In," "Elmer's Tune," "Let's All Sing Together," "That Old Black Magic," "Cinderella, Stay in My Arms," "A String of Pearls," and "Pennsylvania 6-5000." Also included are excerpts from the soundtrack of "The Glenn Miller Story," featuring Stewart and June Allyson enacting Miller's courtship of his wife, Helen, and an excerpt from a Glenn Miller Chesterfield program from 1942. Includes commercials. Continues with R91:0051.
