Summary
The first episode in this series of German television programs written and directed by film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Part one of this two-part program entitled "Jochen und Marion." Fassbinder's uncharacteristically optimistic series combines family bonds with social concerns as characters battle with their seemingly limited destinies and muse over the working-class consciousness. The series focuses on the Kruger family, including the grandmother, Oma; the son, Jochen; and his extended family of factory workers. Jochen falls in love with a girl named Marion during Oma's birthday party. Though most members of the Kruger family express a fatalistic attitude toward their lives, especially when they are in one another's presence, Jochen shares a restless optimism with Oma. Strengthened by his new love affair, Jochen attempts to diffuse tensions between labor and management at the factory by developing a new machine that allows his crew to meet their impossible deadline. Meanwhile, Oma finds a new lover, Gregor, and begins plans to evolve into a new stage of her life. Jochen and Marion discuss their developing relationship and their unsatisfying jobs, and the conversation strengthens their belief that "people die because they can't do what they please." Meanwhile, Oma adopts the same philosophy and busily makes plans to move out of the Kruger house to live with her lover, Gregor. At the factory, Jochen convinces his friends and co-workers that they must strike against unfair labor practices.
