EIGHT HOURS ARE NOT A DAY {ACHT STUNDEN SIND KEIN
TAG}, EPISODE 2: OMA UND GREGOR (TV)

Summary

The second episode in this series of German television programs written and directed by film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Fassbinder's uncharacteristically optimistic series combines family bonds with social concerns as characters battle with their seemingly limited destinies and muse over the working-class consciousness. The series focuses on the Kruger family, including the grandmother, Oma; the son, Jochen (John); and his extended family of factory workers. In this episode, entitled "Oma und Gregor," Oma and Gregor begin looking for an apartment to share, and as the search proves to be difficult due to their small, combined pension, Oma becomes increasingly resourceful. Gregor calmly accepts the absurd tactics that Oma employs as she searches for an apartment; his complacency further provokes Oma's need to challenge the status quo. During the search, they come upon a small municipal library that is being shut down. Because working women are having an unusually difficult time finding an available kindergarten, Oma and Gregor decide to take matters into their own hands and intervene in the fate of the library.
