Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. In this program, Steve Martin fills in as a guest host. His guests include singer Pat Boone, comedians Chevy Chase and Jay Leno, and gadget collector Stan Kann. Steve Martin opens with a monologue in which he covers the following topics: the dangers of achieving success in show business, the real reason that he was asked to host the show, the history of dance, and the latest trumpeting techniques. Before the celebrity guests arrive, Martin talks about his upcoming comedy concert tour and his new album. Martin's first guest, Chevy Chase, takes over for a few minutes while Martin takes a bathroom break. And when Martin returns, they look at a film clip and say hello to audience member John Belushi. Chase talks about the future of comedy, does a few impressions, and demonstrates his talent as a pianist. Martin's next guest is Pat Boone, who sings "Honky Tonk" and then talks to Martin about his (Boone's) early recording career, his favorite comedians, his children, and his relationship with his family. At Martin's request, Boone sings another song, "Ain't Going Down in the Ground." Next, Jay Leno performs a monologue which deals with the language and practices of newsmen, television commercials, parents, college, and mobile homes. When he joins Steve Martin, he talks about the horrors of the stand-up circuit. Next, Martin introduces Stan Kann, who presents the following samples from his gadget collection: a pasta maker, a sing-along radio, an electric whisk, a high-tech golf putter, and a cold can cooler.
