BONANZA: THE WISH (TV)
Summary
One in this long-running western drama series about widower Ben Cartwright, his sons, and their adventures on their ranch in Nevada's Ponderosa. In this episode, good-natured Hoss delays a fishing holiday in order to help a freed slave and his family restore their drought-ravaged farm. When Hoss meets a friendly, young boy named John and takes him back home, the boy's father, Sam, greets Hoss less enthusiastically and distrusts him because he is white. The encounter inspires Hoss to ponder the difficulties of surmounting racial intolerance and fear. Young John asks Hoss to stay and help his father revitalize the farm, but before Hoss can help till the land he must cultivate Sam's trust. The two men grow closer and the farm begins to prosper, but the bigotry of jealous neighbors imperils the progress. Sam is initially determined to flee from the persecution and move to a new community, but after two men violently beat up John, Sam stays long enough to fight the prejudice that has shattered his family's security. With Hoss's support, Sam attempts to find the men to exact a just punishment for their cruel actions. Commercials deleted.
