Summary

Highlights of this program include the following: in the "Man in the Street" segment, Louis Nye, Don Knotts, and Tom Poston offer their New Year's resolutions to Steve Allen; the host announces the marriage of Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence; he makes predictions for 1958; Martha Davis and Spouse perform "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter"; Allen imagines what it would be like to raise a daughter (portrayed by Margaret O'Brien); he performs "But I Haven't Got Him," accompanied by the orchestra; comedy duo Mike Nichols and Elaine May perform a routine about an egotistical disc jockey interviewing a young female star; Peter Ustinov performs an impersonation of a German music teacher who speaks very little English; the "Coming Attractions Girl" enters with a book of pictures of the stars of the following week's show; Jerry Vale sings "Pretend You Don't See Her"; and Steve Allen looks ahead to New Year's Eve around the world with Peter Ustinov, who portrays various reporters covering the events going on in Times Square, London, Paris, and Moscow.
