Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Richard Pryor hosts this program, with guests Gil Scott-Heron, Jim Henson's Muppets, Shelley Pryor, and a short film by Albert Brooks. Highlights include the following: Chevy Chase checks into the Samurai Hotel and witnesses a battle between dueling samurais John Belushi and Richard Pryor; Jane Curtin interviews Pryor, who plays a black author masquerading as a white man in order to research a book; a parody commercial offers "New Dad" family insurance; Pryor portrays a criminal in a recurring theme about bogus police line-ups; Chase gives Pryor a word-association test in which racial slurs are used; Dan Aykroyd plays a family man who sees racial changes all around him; Chase reports the "Weekend Update" news segment during which Gilda Radner as Emily Litella presents an editorial reply on "busting" schoolchildren; a parody commercial promotes Spud Beer; Pryor plays a U.S. Army major who mistakenly swallows a suicide pill; Jim Henson's Muppets portray drunken creatures in a prehistoric world; Laraine Newman satirizes a possessed child in "Exorcist II," with Pryor as the priest called in to save her; Shelley Pryor tells a love story about two horses on a carousel as a metaphor for interracial relationships; and Albert Brooks presents a short film made from his sick bed. In addition, Pryor presents two comic monologues, and Gil Scott-Heron performs a song about Johannesburg, South Africa, and another about coming to life in springtime. Includes commercials.
