WALL STREET WEEK {WALL $TREET WEEK} WITH LOUIS RUKEYSER: AN INVESTMENT PRIMER {SPECIAL} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of financial analysis programs hosted by Louis Rukeyser. This special, one-hour episode tries to educate the beginning investor, offering basic, valuable advice about beginning investments in stocks, bonds, and gold. Rukeyser defines stocks, stockholders, mutual funds, "blue chip" stocks, and trading exchanges, and he explains the way to read the stock table in the newspaper. He subsequently interviews guest panelists Peter Lynch, vice president of Fidelity Management and Research Co., and Stan Weinstein, editor and publisher for "The Professional Tape Reader." Both offer advice on the ways to choose stocks, the sensible number of stocks with which to begin, mistakes to avoid, the ways to research stocks, and the ways to decide when to sell. Weinstein also explains his theory of the four stages that stocks go through. Next, Rukeyser covers taxable and tax-free bonds; he defines the difference between bondholders and stockholders, describes different bond options, and explains the way that bond rating operates as well as the way to read a "bond table" in the newspaper. Rukeyser also interviews William H. Gross, managing director for the Pacific Investment Management Co., and James Lebenthal, chairman of the board of Lebenthal & Co., Inc. These panelists provide advice for first-time bond investors about the ways to choose bonds and the kinds of bonds to select. They also explain the drawbacks involved with bonds, the difference between "unit trust" and "bond fund," and the relationship between interest and bonds. Finally, Rukeyser interviews two individuals about investing in the volatile gold market. Charles Stahl, editor of "Green's Commodity Market Comments," and Harry Browne, investment advisor, explain the conditions under which one should buy gold, the factors that influence the price of gold, the ways to use gold investments as an insurance policy, the difference between investing in gold and investing in gold mining stocks, and the difference between a "permanent portfolio" and the rest of one's investments. Breaks to local public television stations were deleted.
