TODAY {JUNE 28, 1985} {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of early morning programs, featuring interviews, special features, and news. This tape includes the first hour of a two-hour broadcast. This episode takes place at the start of the third week of the Trans World Airlines (TWA) Flight 847 hostage crisis. First, at the news desk, John Palmer reports on day fifteen of the hostage crisis. Then, John Cochran, via telephone, reports from Beirut on a Lebanese military official claiming the hostage situation will be settled within the next forty-eight hours. Palmer reports on how President Ronald Reagan is flying to suburban Chicago for a speech on tax reform. Next, Andrea Mitchell, live at the White House, reports on the news blackout from the President and Congress regarding the hostage situation. Palmer also reports on William Bradford Reynolds remaining as head of the civil rights division of the Justice Department, and the latest musical effort to help the starving in Africa. Heidi Schulman reports that Hollywood child actors are participating in the UNICEF "Kids for Kids in Africa" effort. Next, Willard Scott, in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the Basketball Hall of Fame, presents the day's weather. Then, co-host Bryant Gumbel in "Close Up" examines Israel's continuing role in the hostage crisis. Gumbel interviews Israeli Cabinet Minister Moshe Arens live via satellite from Tel Aviv, who touches on such topics as: whether a solution to the hostage situation will really arise within the next forty-eight hours; the "new understanding" between America and Israel; whether Israel is competing with Nabih Berri, Lebanese Minister of Justice, for public support from America; and his feelings as to when the hostage situation may be resolved. Next, co-host Jane Pauley interviews Dr. Ray Cline of the Georgetown Center for Strategic Studies from Washington, D.C., to touch on such topics as: who is responsible for the hostage kidnapping; the dependence on Syria for release of the hostages and how that will affect America; and how the TWA situation may be a "blessing in disguise" for America if measures are taken to protect against terrorism in the future. Then, Gumbel and Pauley discuss "gadgets" and bubblegum etiquette in light of bubblegum now being marketed in a tube. Back at the news desk, Palmer again speaks with Cochran about the latest in the hostage situation in regards to when and where the hostages may be released. In other news, Palmer reports on Vice President George H.W. Bush's recent news conference in Brussels in which he discussed the Soviet Union's latest nuclear missile deployment, and the Canadian government's proposal for improving airport security. Clips show Thomas Ashwood, of the Airline Pilots union, testifying in Washington D.C. about his organization's feelings on the presence of guns on their aircrafts. Then, Scott presents the day's weather, again from Springfield, noting that the Basketball Hall of Fame will open in two days. Next, Mike Jensen reports on Pepsi-Cola employees in Purchase, New York who are taking advantage of the company's unique summer workweek. Then, Pauley presents a clip showing Allyn Conwell, one of the Flight 847 hostages, making a plea for Israel to release its Lebanese prisoners, as demanded by the Shiites. His mother Lois Conwell speaks with Pauley via satellite from Houston. Lois Conwell discusses how she thinks Allyn looks and her own feelings on her son's statements. Next, Gene Shalit concludes his week-long interview with "Pale Rider" director Clint Eastwood. In a pre-recorded segment, Eastwood touches on such topics as: motivations people have ascribed to him in the past due to themes or imagery in his films; possible careers he could have had aside from film; what his final meal would be as a death row inmate; how he keeps in such great shape; whether he does his own stunts; whether it was really him hanging off an alp in "The Eiger Sanction"; his recent trip to the Cannes Film Festival; and France's feelings on him and his work. Gumbel and Pauley wrap up the first hour by discussing the "emotional roller coaster" of the ongoing hostage crisis. Also, Scott does an in-studio commercial for I.B.M. computers, then one for Tartar Control Crest. Shalit does an in-studio commercial for Ball Park franks. Includes commercials. Continues on T:05525.
