HOLLYWOOD PALACE, THE {HOST: MILTON BERLE; BUDDY RICH, WILLIE MAYS, ROY ROGERS, DALE EVANS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of lavish, vaudeville-inspired weekly variety programs. Guest host Milton Berle welcomes the Dunhills, Marilyn King, Willie Mays, Jimmy Piersall, Maury Wills, the Buddy Rich Orchestra, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Prassano Rao, and the Royal Quartet. Highlights include: a performance by the tuxedo-clad, tap-dancing trio, the Dunhills; Marilyn King sings "Sonny"; baseball players Jimmy Piersall, Maury Wills, and Willie Mays trade quips with the host before singing "Diamonds Are a Boy's Best Friend"; drummer Buddy Rich leads his orchestra through an instrumental number; Marilyn King joins the Buddy Rich Orchestra in a rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In" -- impersonating Louis Armstrong for part of the song; the Dunhills then do an improvised dance number (along with Berle) to the accompaniment of the Buddy Rich Orchestra; Berle presents Playboy magazine's All-Star Jazz Poll award for drumming to Rich; Roy Rogers and Dale Evans sing a medley of love songs, including "What the World Needs Now Is Love" and "Amore"; Berle then exchanges bon mots with Rogers and Evans; Prassano Rao performs a series of "shadowgraphs," manipulating his hands before a projected light to form the shape of generic faces, animals, and Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, Charles de Gaulle, and John F. Kennedy; the Royal Quartet performs "operetta favorites"; Berle removes his clown-like makeup while talking affectionately about vaudeville, and early Broadway; he then sings "Your Entertainment" (a variation of "That's Entertainment"), and expresses his love for show business and the entertainer's life. Includes commercials and public service announcements. (This is a black-and-white copy of a color telecast.)
