STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES: THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES (TV)
Summary
One in the series of science fiction programs about the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise. In this episode, Starfleet orders the Enterprise to help guard an important shipment of grain. The Federation and the Klingon empire are fighting for the right to claim Sherman's Planet, and it has been decreed by the planet's council that whichever race is able to develop the planet most efficiently will win the right to it. In an effort to do this, an important earth grain -- quadrotriticale -- is being stored and protected from Klingon sabotage on deep space station K-7, and Kirk and his crew are ordered to guard the storage bins by Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs Nils Barris (William Schallert) and Starfleet. Kirk is angered by the arrogant attitude of Barris and his assistant, Darvin, whom he considers petty bureaucrats, but he has no choice except to assign guards, give the rest of his crew shore leave, and attempt to maintain peace on the station when a Klingon ship arrives and also demands shore leave. To complicate matters, trader Cyrano Jones is selling "tribbles," cute fluffy balls of furs which make wonderful pets but reproduce at an alarming rate. When Uhura brings a tribble aboard the Enterprise, the ship is soon overrun by the creatures, which do nothing but purr, eat, and multiply. Though Kirk considers the creatures an annoyance, he is grateful when they inadvertently foil a Klingon plot. Commercials deleted.
