GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA: L'ENFANT ET LES SORTILEGES {THE SPELLBOUND CHILD} (TV)
Summary
One in this dance series presented under the umbrella of "Great Performances." In this presentation, introduced by Edward Villella, the New York City Ballet and Orchestra perform Maurice Ravel's "L'Enfant et les Sortilges" ("The Spellbound Child"), choreographed by George Balanchine. In the story, a disobedient young boy is reprimanded by his mother and must stay in his room until suppertime. In the midst of a temper-tantrum, he abuses his pets and furniture, even breaking his grandfather clock. To his surprise, the belongings that he mistreated come alive and question his cruel behavior. Frightened, he flees to the garden, where he finds that the trees and animals are equally hostile to him. When a squirrel gets hurt in the commotion, the boy feels pity and, bandaging its paw, finally learns the lesson of compassion. In "Birds, Bees and Storks," a short animation feature that follows the program, a father (narrated by Peter Sellers) tries to explain "the facts of life" to his son.
