JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {EXCERPT} {THE HONEYMOONERS: THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. This excerpt from a program features an early sketch of "The Honeymooners" that originally aired in 1953. This series of sketches concerns Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. In this sketch, Ralph becomes known as a hero after he helps the police capture a killer named Bullets Durgom, but Ralph consequently becomes involved in a crooked political campaign scheme. Two men, hoping to capitalize on Ralph's heroic reputation, encourage him to run for local assemblyman so that they can control him when he gets into office. Alice tries to persuade Ralph not to get involved in the campaign; since he has no political experience, she is convinced that the two men are crooks. Despite his wife's warnings, Ralph is convinced that he can win the election and help his community. But the two men threaten Ralph when he campaigns on his own, and they force him to read a speech that they have written for him. Jack Albertson appears briefly as a man who questions Ralph's ability to be an assemblyman. Includes commercials.

(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
