PERSON TO PERSON {TOMMY ARMOUR; MOSS HART & KITTY CARLISLE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live interview programs. In this edition, host Edward R. Murrow first visits the home of Scottish-born golfer and golf teacher Tommy Armour, author of "A Round of Golf with Tommy Armour." Murrow, Armour, and Armour's wife discuss the recently published book, which the golfer explains is designed to help the amateur player conduct himself more intelligently on the golf course. When asked about nerves on the golf course, Armour notes that he suffers mildly but describes the far worse agonies of golfers he has known, including Bobby Jones and Byron Nelson. Armour goes on to show Murrow a couple of trophies, to discuss his beginnings as a golfer, and to relate legends about the origins of the game. Murrow thanks the Armours and goes on to an extensively filmed visit of the Manhattan apartment of playwright/director Moss Hart and his wife, actress/singer Kitty Carlisle. After joking with Murrow about his own impoverished beginnings, the playwright takes the cameras into the music room, where his children Cathy and Chris are seated at the piano. After the children play a portion of "Chopsticks," Hart requests some Brahms, and Chris plays the composer's well-known "Lullaby" while Kitty Carlisle sings. The Harts bid their children goodnight and take Murrow on a tour of the large apartment; Carlisle explains that her husband supervised its decoration while she was pregnant with Cathy. She suggests that Hart take Murrow to his study, which the playwright calls his "indoor-outdoor" room since it is decorated like a patio although it is an interior chamber. Murrow and Hart then discuss the playwright's greatest successes, which include winning the Pulitzer Prize with co-author George S. Kaufman for "You Can't Take It with You"; writing the psychoanalytic play "Lady in the Dark"; embarking on the successful fund-raising venture of the wartime play "Winged Victory"; and reaping the financial rewards of the hit musical "My Fair Lady," which he directed. Hart shows off an advance copy of his autobiography, "Act One," and accompanies Murrow on a final visit with Carlisle in the morning room. Includes commercials and a promo.
