YOU BET YOUR LIFE {PILOT} {UNAIRED} (TV)

Summary

An unaired CBS pilot for this series of quiz shows, hosted by Groucho Marx, which began as a radio series. Prior to Marx's introduction to the show, stagehands make such preparations as warm-ups, sound checks, and last-minute adjustments. The program begins as Marx conducts humorous interviews with each of the three couples selected by the studio audience. The players try to win money by betting any amount of their twenty-dollar purse on the questions in their chosen category. The couple that wins the most money in this round must then answer a question worth one thousand dollars. In addition, uttering the secret word of the day earns players an extra prize. The contestants on this program include: a tall pair of newlyweds who guess the names of songs with the word "baby" in the title; a carhop and a married man unable to hold down a job, who must answer questions about dice; and a University of Southern California football player and an Iranian chiropractor claiming to be a sheik and former wrestler, who must guess the names of famous rivers.

(This series was telecast on NBC from 1950 to 1961; syndicated versions with different hosts were also telecast in 1980 and 1992.)
