DISNEY SUNDAY MOVIE, THE: PARENT TRAP II (TV)

Summary

One in this series of Disney shows for families presented under the umbrella title "The Disney Sunday Movie." Michael Eisner, the chairman of the Walt Disney Company, hosts this program and explains the concept of split-screen technology.

As the narrative opens, eleven-year-old Nikki Ferris, the daughter of divorced parents, is unhappy that her mother, Sharon, has decided to move to New York City from Tampa to take advantage of a job opportunity. Nikki must attend summer classes to help raise her grades so she can go to a prestigious all-girls school in New York. During her first day at summer school, Nikki meets a girl named Mary Grand, who lives with her widowed father, Bill. Mary and Nikki immediately become best friends, but are dismayed when they remember that in a couple of months they will be separated by thousands of miles. The two girls come up with a brilliant plan to have Nikki's mother and Mary's father fall in love and get married so that they will become stepsisters. The only problem is that they find it difficult to get their parents to spend time together. Nikki remembers that her mother and her mother's twin sister, Susan, reunited their divorced parents when they were children. It also occurs to her that her aunt may be just the person to help her and Mary solve their problem. The three decide that Susan will impersonate Sharon and get Bill to fall in love with her. However, unbeknowst to the three schemers, Nikki's mother becomes aware of their plan and decides to teach her sister a lesson by inviting Susan's husband, Brian, to Tampa.

After the program, actress Hayley Mills, who starred in the original "Parent Trap" film, recalls her childhood as a Disney star and comments on Walt Disney's personality and working with split-screen technology. In addition, clips from the following Hayley Mills movies are shown: "Pollyanna" (1960), "The Parent Trap" (1961), "In Search of the Castaways" (1962), "Summer Magic" (1963), "The Moon-Spinners" (1964), and "That Darn Cat" (1965). Finally, writer Stuart Krieger recalls his teenage crush on Mills. Includes commercials, promos, and an ABC Sports Update.
