Summary
One in this series of dramas presented under the umbrella of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. In the first installment of the television adaptation of J.B. Priestly's 1965 novel, young Richard Herncastle must cope with the death of his mother, which forces him to join his Uncle Nick on the road, travelling in a vaudeville magic act. Nick learns about life from the members of the vaudeville troupe, including an older actress and a pathetic, has-been comic. Set in Great Britain immediately before the outbreak of World War I, Richard witnesses the end of vaudeville and the beginning of the end of Old England.
