20/20: THE BAR GIRLS . . .THE SAILORS . . . AIDS; NO WARNING AT ALL; KATHARINE HEPBURN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazines programs. Hugh Downs introduces the first segment, which addresses the issue of U.S. military personnel in the Philippines contracting and spreading the AIDS virus by associating with prostitutes or "bar girls" licensed by the Philippine government. The strategic importance of the Philippines to the U.S. is noted, followed by a clip of General Douglas MacArthur's triumphant return to the Philippines. Reporter Tom Jarriel interviews U.S. Navy physician Lieutenant Commander Thomas O'Rourke about the problem, Dr. Manuel Dayrit from the Philippines Ministry of Health about education and the control of the virus, and Dr. Virginia Sevilla of the Ministry of Health about revoking the licenses of infected "bar girls," resulting in underground prostitution. O'Rourke's lawyer, Richard Walden, states that the U.S. Navy wants to minimize the situation, which could jeopardize the U.S. military presence in the Philippines. Also interviewed is club owner Jim Fox. The second segment focuses on reports that defective Bic disposable butane lighters have caused numerous injuries and deaths. Reporter Bob Brown interviews Dr. John Geremia, a mechanical engineer, who explains the workings of such lighters and the mishaps that can occur. Bruno Bich, Bic Corporation president, describes the quality control checks behind the manufacturing process and improvements in their safety. Burn victim Cynthia Littlejohn and her attorney Mel Kardos discuss her upcoming lawsuit against Bic, attorney John Andrews addresses the safety problems, and Rep. James Florio remarks on the role of the U.S. Products Safety Commission in the investigation. Brown also interviews burn victims Ramona Boroff, John Patterson, and Ann, Birger, and Bob Lovli -- the family of Kenneth Lovli -- who died as a result of a defective Bic lighter. In the final segment, Barbara Walters interviews legendary film star Katharine Hepburn in her Manhattan home. Hepburn chronicles her early life with socially conscious parents, her fifteen-year-old brother's suicide, and her short-lived marriage to Philadelphia stockbroker Ludlow Ogden Smith. Hepburn also discusses the reason her head shakes; the kind of tree she would choose to be; her new book, "The Making of 'The African Queen'," followed by a clip from the film; and Humphrey Bogart's love of acting. Hepburn also talks publicly for the first time about her relationship with actor Spencer Tracy and comments on other topics, including: a description of herself as mocha chip ice cream and Tracy as a baked potato; her work with him in nine films over a twenty-year period; her decision to stop straining to care for him during his battle with heart disease, followed by a clip from "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"; her respect for Tracy's wife, which influenced her decision not to appear with him publicly; her inability to be intimate with most people; and her consequent realization that she never really knew Tracy. Includes commercials and promos and features moments from ABC's Olympic Diary. Hugh Downs closes the program by giving a preview of the topics in an upcoming episode of "Nightline." This program is closed-captioned.
