ABC NEWS SPECIAL: JENNINGS/KOPPEL REPORT: QUESTIONS OF POLICY/QUESTIONS OF WAR {POSSIBLE WAR IN THE PERSIAN GULF} (TV)

Summary

Hosted by Peter Jennings and Ted Koppel, this special public affairs program reviews recent U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf and examines the possibility of the outbreak of war in the area. Jennings and Koppel review events over the last eight months that have led to the current crisis in the Gulf and speculate on possible U.S. military action. Topics discussed include the effects of the Iran-Contra scandal on U.S. foreign relations in the region; the events that led to the Soviet Union's involvement in the Persian Gulf; criticism of the Reagan administration's foreign policy; the readiness of U.S. military forces to enter war if necessary; Kuwait's position in approaching both the Soviet Union and the U.S. for protection from Iran; and how Iranian forces might retaliate by using unconventional warfare tactics such as terrorism. Highlights of the program include interviews with National Security Advisor Frank Carlucci and Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Armitage; a taped interview with Adm. William Crowe, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and live interviews (from Baghdad) with Tariq Aziz, foreign minister of Iraq, and (from Washington) Saud Nasir Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti ambassador to the U.S. Other experts on the situation who appear in taped interview segments include the following: national security expert Gary Sick; Kuwaiti oil minister Sheikh Ali Al-Khalifa; Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad of Kuwait; U.S. Asst. Secretary of State Richard Murphy; and former U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Lehman. Included are clips of Lt. Col. Oliver North at the Iran-Contra hearings; Pres. Ronald Reagan; former Speaker of the House Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill; U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese; Rep. Rob Torricelli of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Norma Kiser, mother of a U.S.S. Stark victim; Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) of the Armed Services Committee; Sen. John Warner (R-Va.); Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.); Adm. William Crowe, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.); White House Chief of Staff Howard Baker; Secretary of State George Schultz; Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio); and Sam Donaldson, reporting from Venice. The program also includes news footage of the attack on the U.S.S. Stark and Mayport Memorial Service for victims of the tragedy. Includes commercials.
