RAIN FOREST: A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SPECIAL (TV)

Summary

One in this occasional series of nature specials, presented by The National Geographic Society. This 1983 documentary examines the rich and varied spectrum of life that exists in the warm and humid rain forests. Rain forests, which house over half of the world's animal species, are the remnants of the primordial jungles that once covered most of the earth. The program focuses on the symbiotic, interconnected, and often predatory nature of the foliage, insects, reptiles, and mammals that live in the rain forests of Costa Rica in Central America. Included is footage illustrating the interdependent nature of rain forest life; the mating and hunting rituals of several life forms; and exotic creatures such as stick spiders, green leaf frogs, poison arrow frogs, spider monkeys, and three-toed sloths. Narrator Richard Kiley warns, however, that although Costa Rica insures that nearly one-fourth of its rain forests are protected against destruction for short-term profits, human wastefulness and irresponsibility may doom the world's rain forests before we are able to identify many of their species.

Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
