SOUTH BANK SHOW, THE: GRACE UNDER PRESSURE (TV)
Summary
One in this weekly art series. Written and presented by British novelist Anthony Burgess, whose work includes "A Clockwork Orange" and "Hemingway and His World," this documentary profiles the American literary giant Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Through still photographs, archival footage, and modern film of the places that Hemingway frequented during his lifetime, the program explores Hemingway's life and career, including his formative years in Illinois; his relationship with his parents; his experience as a reporter for the Kansas City Star, which led him to become a novelist; his participation in World Wars I and II and the Spanish Civil War; his time spent overseas writing; and his relationships with his four wives and other women. Included are clips and footage of Oak Park and River Forest High School in Illinois; bull fighting and hunting expeditions; "Spanish Earth," a propoganda film about the Spanish Civil War, written and narrated by Hemingway; a Movietone News press release about Hemingway's plane crashes in Africa, which led to reports of his death; the 1954 Nobel Prize awards ceremony in Stockholm; and Hemingway speaking in Spanish about the prize. Also included are excerpts from film adaptations of Hemingway's work: "Adventures of a Young Man" (1962, Richard Beymer and Ricardo Montalban), "A Farewell to Arms" (1932, Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou), "The Sun Also Rises" (1957, Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, and Mel Ferrer), "To Have and Have Not" (1945, Humphrey Bogart and Walter Brennan), and an animated portion of "The Old Man in the Sea."
