GOOD MORNING AMERICA {MOSCOW SUMMIT} (TV)
Summary
One in this early morning series that includes interviews, special features, and news. This episode covers the Moscow Summit between President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and features anchors Charles Gibson in Moscow and Joan Lunden in New York. First, Gibson and ABC News anchor Peter Jennings discuss an address Reagan is about to give at Moscow State University. Then, the two men are joined by Soviet analyst Marshall Goldman for his thoughts. Then, the program presents live coverage of Reagan's address. Anatoly Logunov, the university's rector, offers some "brief" welcoming remarks before Reagan takes the lectern to touch on such topics as: why First Lady Nancy Reagan was unable to attend the address; the significance of the Moscow Summit; the "information revolution" quietly sweeping the globe; the import of silicon chips; entrepreneurialism in a free market economy; what failing can teach someone; how economic freedom is spreading around the world; the growth of democracy; the upcoming 1988 U.S. presidential election; the meaning of freedom in America, as well as freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial in America; the unintrusive nature of democratic government; author Boris Pasternak's thoughts in "Doctor Zhivago" on the "beast who sleeps in man"; the world looking expectantly toward positive change; how a notable scene from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" relates to perestroika; the need to tear down the Berlin Wall; a student exchange program between the Soviet Union and America; the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty; Russia withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan; and Americans and Russians' joint wish for peace over war. Students then participate in a question-and-answer segment with Reagan where he touches on such topics as: achieving an arms control agreement with Gorbachev; how American student and youth problems have changed since Reagan's salad days; in what parts of the world America should focus its efforts to eliminate tensions; feelings on ongoing political problems in South Africa and Nicaragua; how to help missing Russian soldiers in Afghanistan get back to their homeland; inevitable "evils" of democracy; how he feels as he nears retirement and whether he would serve a third term were it allowable; plans to travel the "mashed potato circuit" after he leaves office to push for an end to term limits; Native Americans that have traveled to Moscow in an attempt to meet with Reagan; and impressions on a recent encounter with "Refuseniks" about their being denied the opportunity to emigrate. Reagan also receives a small gift from the university. Afterward, Gibson, Jennings, and Marshall analyze the speech. Then, Sheilah Kast, reporting from the auditorium, offers her impressions of the "vintage" Reagan address, as well as those of the students and faculty members in attendance. Afterward, Steve Fox, in Red Square, discusses historically significant places in the area. He then speaks with two American tourists who offer their impressions on the Soviet Union. Next, fitness editor Dan Isaacson reports on a Philadelphia fitness center that offers "Rambo Aerobics" classes -- army-inspired workout regimens. Then, Paula Zahn recaps the day's news stories, notably an update on arms control agreements and Nancy Reagan's visit to Leningrad. Next, David Ensor reports on how glasnost is affecting media coverage in the Soviet Union. Zahn then reports on Attorney General Edwin Meese's possible resignation before the presidential election, in light of his investigation by the Office of the Independent Counsel. Zahn also addresses the cancer diagnosis of JosŽ Napoleon Duarte, president of El Salvador, and his pending trip to the United States for treatment. Then, Spencer Christian offers the day's weather. Next, Hattie Kauffman examines the "Venice" of the Soviet Union, Leningrad, discussing its history and life in the present day. In previously taped footage, Lunden briefly speaks with Sam Waterston and Robert Prosky -- the stars of "A Walk in the Woods," a play about arms negotiations between a Russian delegate and his American counterpart -- and how the play relates to the current situation. Then, Waterston and Prosky perform a scene from the play. Finally, Fox explains the history of St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, after which Gibson offers a summation on the Moscow Summit. Includes commercials.
