LIVE FROM THE MET: METROPOLITAN OPERA CENTENNIAL
GALA II {TAPE 3 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:13310. Tape three of three. The second concert in this special two-concert celebration of the Metropolitan Opera's 100th anniversary, hosted by Alexander Skourby, and featuring performances from some of opera's most celebrated singers, supported by the entire Metropolitan Opera repertory company (commentary provided by announcer Peter Allen). This program also includes the intermission screenings of documentary films that examine different chapters of the opera company's history as well as several short films that give a behind-the-scenes look at the Metropolitan Opera. This tape begins with Peter Allen's commentary at the end of the second intermission. When the concert resumes, the curtain opens to reveal honored guests -- all stars of past Met operas -- seated on the stage. The group is introduced and is comprised of the following luminaries: Rose Bampton, Erna Berger, Kitty Carlisle, Helen Jepson, Dorothy Kirsten, Brenda Lewis, Martha Lipton, Zinka Milanov, Jarmila Novotna, Neil Rankin, Delia Rigal, Margaret Roggero, Stella Roman, Bidu Sayao, Eleanor Steber, Risa Stevens, Lorenzo Alvary, Gabor Carelli, Walter Cassel, Ferruccio Tagliavini, George Shirley, Theodor Uppman, Cesare Valletti, and Ramon Vinay. The following performances take place with the guests seated downstage and James Levine conducting: Katia Ricciarelli, William Lewis, and Nicolai Ghiaurnov sing the final trio from Charles Gounod's "Faust"; Leona Mitchell and Giuliano Ciannella perform the Act I duet from Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly"; Timothy Jenkins sings the Act V prayer from Richard Wagner's "Rienzi"; Diane Kesling, Edda Moser, Gail Dubinbaum, David Rendall, John Darrenkamp, Sesto Bruscatini, and Ara Berberian are joined by the Metropolitan Opera Chorus to perform the Act I finale from Gioacchino Rossini's "L'Italia in Algeri"; Neil Shicoff and Michael Best are joined by the men's chorus for a rendition of the Prologue aria from Jacques Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann; Marilyn Horne sings "Mon couer s'ouvre a ta voix" from Camille Saint-Saens' "Samson et Dalila; Birgit Nilsson sings "Isolde's Narrative and Curse" from Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde"; and Leontyne Price and Luciano Pavarotti perform the Act II duet from Giuseppe Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera." The program ends as all of the day's performers, including the Chorus and the honored guests, join on stage and sing "Happy Birthday" in honor of the Met's 100th anniversary.
