THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN: THE BIRTH OF THE CONSTITUTION (TV)
Summary
One in this eight-part miniseries which stars the "Peanuts" characters as they are transported into the past and future to participate in various events in American history. In this episode, part two of eight, the "Peanuts" gang works at Independence Hall during the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Linus explains to the others the importance of the convention and the failure of the Articles of Confederation to unite the country. After dictating the gang's chores for the convention, Linus then sits and listens to the proceedings. He is awed by General George Washington, who chairs. The delegates discuss the legislative branch and the election of representatives to the two houses. In the meantime, Charlie Brown shows Lucy a new game he has invented that resembles baseball. Back at the convention, the delegates argue about the executive branch and the chief executive. As the days and months pass, Linus and the gang become increasingly worried about the delegates' intense debates, concerned that they will be unable, finally, to compromise. At this point, the delegates begin debating the nature of the judicial branch. Peppermint Patty writes a letter explaining the proceedings of the convention and her fear that the Constitution will not be passed. In the meantime, Charlie Brown develops games similar to basketball and football, and delegate Benjamin Franklin asks to use Charlie Brown's kite to fly in a storm. Finally, the delegates sign the Constitution, and Linus explains that each state has to approve the new government before it can be instituted. Commercials deleted.
