CAMERA 2: BARBIE: A SECOND LIFE {BARBIE: UNE
DEUXIEME VIE} {FRENCH} (TV)

Summary

This documentary examines the post-war life of Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and reveals startling information about his life in Latin America after his re-emergence there in 1951. This compelling investigation reveals that French authorities knew that Klaus Altmann -- confidence man and counsel to dictators and drug traffickers -- and Klaus Barbie -- "the Butcher of Lyon" -- were one and the same. Additionally, Barbie was aided by the CIA, who supported his anti-Communist activities. Combining documentary footage and interviews with Bolivian officials, Barbie's career in Bolivia is reconstructed and the events leading up to his arrest and extradition to France in 1983 are documented. The following people comment on the life of Altmann in South America: Altmann's bodyguard Alvaro de Castro; Secretary of the Interior Gustavo Sanchez; journalist Merry Flores Savedra; Mayor of La Paz Gaston Velasco; French journalist Albert Brun; Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld; deputy of La Paz, Gloria Ardaya; and former Minister of Information Rueda Pena. They specifically discuss the following subjects, among others: Altmann's ability to create a shipping company for the landblocked country of Bolivia; how Altmann made himself untouchable; Altmann's political views and establishment of a militia; Altmann's involvement with the various dictatorships of Bolivia; the Schwendts; Altmann's alleged work for the C.I.A.; attempts to trap Altmann into admitting that he was Klaus Barbie; the loopholes in German law that protected Barbie from being imprisoned; why the Bolivians would not release him to the French; Altmann's career as a weapons supplier; the militia group in Santa Cruz, Los Novios de la Muerte; how Altmann's "second life" was finally brought to an end; and how Barbie's arrest affected him. Also included is footage of an interview with Klaus Altmann, who denies that he is Barbie and photos taken of Altmann over the years.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Michael Finkelstein and Sue-ann Friedman.
