BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: DEATH BE MY DESTINY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist. In this episode, a narrowly averted plunge down an empty elevator shaft causes Bob to become obsessed with thoughts of dying and paralyzed by fear. The episode opens with Bob counseling the chronically phobic Mr. Herd to confront his own fears and obtain a driver's license. At home that evening, Bob chides his neurotic neighbor Howard Borden for vowing to give up his job as an airline navigator to become a shoe salesman after a particularly treacherous flight. Bob changes his tune, however, after his own brush with death: He begins to suffer from nightmares and avoids elevators at all costs. Highlights include Howard's pantomime of a bizarre, fatal household accident, and an argument between Bob's office mates Jerry and Carol, in which Jerry insults Carol's distinctive hairstyle. Commercials deleted.
