Summary
One in this series of music/variety programs featuring a
variety of topics and performers relating to Ireland and
Irish/Americans. In the first segment the music group
Blackbird performs three numbers: "Castle Drummond,"
"Captain Thompson," and "The Gravel Walk." Next,
storyteller Jay O'Callahan tells the folk tale "Connor
and the Leprechaun" to a group of school children, after
which he talks about the Irish love of language and the
ways in which words bring people together. "Having a
Time" shows a local political gathering during St.
Patrick's week at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club,
and the fourth segment features Caitriona Yeats playing
two selections on the harp. The final portion of the
program is a look at radio and television personality
Fred Allen. It features excerpts of his radio shows, an
examination of his "feud" with Jack Benny, and an
interview with Edward Weeks, editor emeritus of The
Atlantic.
(Each of these segments originally aired as fillers
following episodes of the 1982 WGBH-TV airing of the
BBC series "Ireland: A Television History.")
Cataloging of this program was made possible by the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 1999.
