THIRTYSOMETHING: SUCCESS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the personal and professional dilemmas confronting a close-knit group of friends -- urban baby boomers in their thirties -- living in Philadelphia. In this episode, Michael and Elliot lose a crucial account that seals the fate of their fledgling ad agency. The men are doubly humiliated by the unctuous advertising mogul Miles Drentell, who first denies them supplemental work and then defeats the stricken duo in an intramural league basketball game. Throughout the episode Michael entertains fantasies of himself as a supremely competent pro basketball player in sequences that feature hoop star Charles Barkley. Michael's cousin Melissa's fortunes unexpectedly rise as she secures a photo assignment for a Carly Simon shoot. Melissa hesitates to invite the gang to a chic party hosted by Simon, however, fearing she will be hemmed in by their long-standing perceptions of her as an unsuccessful flake. Melissa's fears are justified when Elliot, in a misguided attempt to impress Drentell, brings him to the party and drunkenly causes a terrible scene. Includes commercials and promos.
